Food Access Coalition
Working together to strengthen community food access across Thunder Bay
The Food Access Coalition (FAC) is a collaborative network of over 50 organizations committed to advancing equitable, community-driven food access programming across the Thunder Bay area. Members include service providers, advocates, and grassroots initiatives offering food banks, meal programs, community kitchens, gardens, and subsidized food options such as the Good Food Box.
If you work or volunteer for a food access organization (food bank, daily meal program, hamper program, etc.), email us at foodaccess@nwofood.ca to learn more about membership or collaboration opportunities.

What we do
Through regular bimonthly meetings held at rotating member locations, the Coalition works to:
- Share tools, knowledge, and resources
- Identify gaps and overlaps in service delivery
- Coordinate emergency food planning
- Support a resilient, connected response to food insecurity
- Advocate for systems change rooted in the right to food and the elimination of poverty
We recognize that food insecurity is a symptom of broader systemic inequalities. FAC members are committed to working toward long-term solutions that center dignity, justice, and community leadership. To learn more, read the FAC Terms of Reference.
Dignified Data Collection
In response to growing concerns about how data is gathered in food access spaces (particularly food banks), FAN-NWO and the Lakehead Social Planning Council (LSPC) co-hosted a community discussion in Spring 2025 focused on reimagining more respectful, trauma-informed, and service-friendly data practices. The outcomes from the event can be found below.
Where to get food in Thunder Bay
This community resource is a collaborative effort of FAN-NWO, with coordination support from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBHDU). Beginning during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, FAC members have worked together to compile and maintain a comprehensive listing of all free and low-cost food programs, making it easier for community members to find up-to-date information on where to access food.
The brochure is updated annually, translated into multiple languages, and widely distributed across Thunder Bay. It reflects our shared commitment to reducing barriers and supporting compassionate, dignified access to food for all.
Food Access Infrastructure Inventory
As part of our Emergency Food Plan, Coalition members have shared information about the assets they have available across programs to contribute to an emergency food response. This data has been compiled into an inventory of assets that includes:
- Vehicles and equipment
- Staff and volunteer capacity
- Communication tools
- Packing and distribution space
- Food and Financial resources
If a food emergency hits our region, this resource ensures that we are well able to respond to community needs based on the strengths and assets we already have. This inventory shows our collective commitment to working together for the benefit of our community.
Email info@nwofood.ca to let us know about changes to your inventory.
